Quick-Start for Exploring Web Resources | Documents distributed in 1999
Democracy and Human Rights is one of the themes being debated in the National Summit on Africa
(www.africasummit.org) process. Regional Summits were
held in Atlanta (May, 1998) and Chicago (September, 1998). Regional Summits are scheduled for San
Francisco (June 4-5, 1999), Baltimore (September 10-11, 1999) and Denver (September 24-25, 1999).
The National Summit will take place in Washington, DC on February 17-20, 2000.
Background material on the theme provided by the summit secretariat and available in HTML format includes:
Summit working papers were prepared by groups of experts as background, in 1998. The Democracy and Human Rights Expert Group consisted on Dr. Francis Deng (Brookings Institutition), Dr. John Entelis (Fordham University), Dr. Edmond Keller (UCLA), Dr. Achola Pala-Okeyo (UN Development Fund for Women) and Dr. Peter Takirambudde (HRW/Africa). Dr. Keller was the chairperson and Dr. Entelis the writer for the group. Synopses of the working papers and draft plans of action were prepared by the summit secretariat.
The draft plans of action are being considered, amended, and voted on by participants at each of the regional summits and at the national summit. (Note: The full plan of action from Atlanta and the rules for deliberate process are available on the summit web site, but only in Adobe Acrobat format.) |
