Economy and Development corresponds to two of the themes being debated in the National Summit on Africa
(www.africasummit.org) process. Regional Summits were
held in Atlanta (May, 1998) and Chicago (September, 1998). Regional Summits are scheduled for San
Francisco (June 4-5, 1999), Baltimore (September 10-11, 1999) and Denver (September 24-25, 1999).
The National Summit will take place in Washington, DC on February 17-20, 2000.
Background material on the themes provided by the summit secretariat and available in HTML format includes:
Economic Development, Trade and Investment, and Job Creation
Sustainable Development, Quality of Life, and the Environment
Summit working papers were prepared by groups of experts as background, in 1998. The Economic Development Expert
Group consisted of Mr. Robert Browne (Twenth-First Century Foundation), Dr. Tetteh Kofi (University of San Francisco), and Dr. Nicolas van de Walle (Michigan State University). Mr. Browne was the chairperson and Dr.Kofi the writer for the group. The Sustainable Development Expert Group consisted of Dr. John Bruce (University of Wisconsin, Madison), Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo (Ncediwe/Brits Solidarity and Exchange Program), Dr. Christopher Delgado (International Food Policy Research Insitute), Dr. Amy Auerbacher Gimbel (formerly with American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sub-Saharan Africa Program), and Dr. Meredeth Turshen (Rutgers University). Dr. Coleman-Adebayo was the chairperson and Dr. Turshen the writer for the group.
Synopses of the working papers and draft plans of action were prepared by the summit secretariat.
The draft plans of action are being considered, amended, and voted on by participants at each of the regional summits and at the national summit. (Note: The full plan of action from Atlanta and the rules for the deliberative process are available on the summit web site, but only in Adobe Acrobat format.) |
