Africa Action’s first annual Baraza was held on October 3rd & 4th, 2003 at the Gallaudet University Conference Center in Washington, DC.
The 2003 Baraza was dedicated to discussions about Africa’s health crisis and the structural obstacles to its resolution. Specifically, it focused on mobilizing support for Africa’s Right to Health, and addressing the challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, debt cancellation and World Bank/IMF policies, barriers to treatment access, and stigma and discrimination.
The Baraza highlighted the connections between the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa and the HIV/AIDS crisis in the U.S., disproportionately concentrated in communities of color. Discussions focused on strategies to challenge and change U.S. policies that fail to address this urgent issue. Participants identified common priorities and opportunities for action in the year ahead.
